Watch the video and answer the following questions:

What is a canon (in music)? Can you hear it in the video?

What are the 3 main features of a ground bass?

  1. In music, a canon is when multiple people play or sing the same song/music at different timings. Canons can be according to the distances between the entries or intervals between two instruments/voices or according to the instruments/voices. In the music above there is a canon because the timings in the left hand is different with the timings in the right hand. The 3 main features of ground bass are the structure, timings and rhythm.

  2. Good work Maiya. What were the three features of ground bass we talked about in class; how long is it? Is it repeated? What instruments play it?

  3. A canon (in music) is when the same melody is played at different times, so that the imitations overlap. In the video there is no canon, even though the tune does repeat itself at 2:00. This is because there is only one person playing the tune, so it can't overlap and become a canon.

The 3 main features of a ground bass (the term used in Baroque music for a bass part) are it being played for 4-8 bars, is being repeated throughout the whole piece, and it being played by a tuba, bass, or left hand on piano.

  4. A canon in music is where an instrument or vocalists are played or sung at different times. There is canon in this video because the left hand is playing at a different time to the right hand. I only know 2 features of a ground base and they are structures and chords.

  5. A canon in music is when two or more voices or instruments play the same melody but at different times. In this piece there is a canon in the first eight bars as they are repeated but there isn't two people playing or two parts being played which shows that there isn't a canon.
Three main features of ground bass are being played for 4-8 bars, left hand on a piano and continuing throughout the whole piece.

  6. A canon is when multiple instruments play the same thing at different times. This piece does not have a canon because the two parts where played at the same time instead it has a harmony. Three main features of a ground bass are that it is played for 4-8 bars and then repeated, it continues for the whole piece and that it is played on the left hand piano and other low instruments.

  7. A canon is a piece of music where one voice or instrument repeats the part of another, throughout the whole piece, and they start at different times so that they overlap. This piece doesn't have canon because the two hands are playing different tunes, and although at one point they play the same tune, this is not canon because they didn't start at different times. Three main features of ground bass are that it is a short, recurring melodic pattern, it is the bass part of a composition and it serves as the principal structural element. It can be played with left hand piano, tuba, bass guitar and synthesizer.

  16. Johann Sebastian Bach, (born March 21, 1685, Eisenach, Thuringia, Ernestine Saxon Duchies [now in Germany]—died July 28, 1750, Leipzig) composer of the Baroque era, the most celebrated member of a large family of northern German musicians. Although he was admired by his contemporaries primarily as an outstanding harpsichordist, organist, and expert on organ building, Bach is now generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time and is celebrated as the creator of the Brandenburg Concertos, The Well-Tempered Clavier, the Mass in B Minor, and numerous other masterpieces of church and instrumental music. Appearing at a propitious moment in the history of music, Bach was able to survey and bring together the principal styles, forms, and national traditions that had developed during preceding generations and, by virtue of his synthesis, enrich them all. He played the violin, harpsicord and the organ. Some of his best-known compositions are the "Mass in B Minor," the "Brandenburg Concertos" and "The Well-Tempered Clavier."
