What is a canon (in music)? Can you hear it in the video?

What are the 3 main features of a ground bass?

66 comments:

  1. In music, a canon is where two or more voices or instruments play or sing the same music at different times.

Yes, I can hear it in the video.

A ground bass is short (it tends to be 4-8 bars long), played by instruments that can create a low sound (e.g. bass guitar, left hand on a piano) and is repeated throughout the piece of music.

  5. 1) A canon is when two or more voices, or instrumental parts, sing or play the same music, only starting at different times. A round is a type of canon, however, in a round each voice or instrument starts at the beginning of their part again, they do this throughout the whole piece. The left hand of Pachelbel's Canon plays the same 8 notes throughout the whole song.
    2) The main features of ground bass are:
    • It is usually done with a low instrument, e.g. Tuba or Cello.
    • It is a rhythm that is repeated through the whole piece.
    • The part repeats throughout the entire piece.

  14. A canon in music is a piece of music in which two or more voices (or instrumental parts) sing or play the same music starting at different times. A round is a type of canon, but in a round each voice, when it finishes, can start at the beginning again so that the piece can go “round and round". There is a canon in the piece. The three main features of ground bass are:
    1) A short sequence of simple notes repeated as a basis for the piece.
    2) It is played non stop throughout the piece.
    3) It is played by bass guitar, double bass, cello, harpsichord, left hand on piano etc.

Generally ground bass is played using low tone instruments and has a short sequence of chords, being played throughout the entirety of the music that contains it.
